As part of the Bundesumweltspiele project, a game-based format on environmental and sustainability topics is being developed that is based on the idea of the Federal Youth Games and can be carried out by students at all secondary schools in Germany. As part of the project, the game will be realized in a pilot phase during the project weeks in summer 2025 with initially 12 schools nationwide. The target group is primarily young people aged 14 and over.
This project is funded by the Federal Environment Agency and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. The funding is provided by resolution of the German Bundestag.

The Bundesumweltspiele consist of two components:
Sustainability rally – A digital scavenger hunt via smartphone (tablet) in the school environment with tasks on environmental and climate protection.
Sustainable projects – The teams have access to further project ideas on an interactive website. The groups can enter their project results such as photos and videos and collect points.
The goal is to get young people involved themselves. This can already be implemented during the development phase in spring 2025 when the rallies are created. In the testing phase in summer 2025, the young people play the rallies and solve further project tasks.
The Bundesumweltspiele cover four subject areas:

Biodiversity

Climate protection

Raw materials & consumption

Water
