Charpashey – Look Around!

The Goethe-Institut in Kolkata (India) has been running the long-term Charpashey project in collaboration with ECOMOVE International since 2007. ‘Charpashey’ means ‘look around’ in Bengali and was the motto of a photo competition and a play for children in Kolkata and Hamburg in 2008.

The project was continued in 2009: Charpashey II targeted schoolchildren aged 13-16 with a short film project (1-minute films). The project made use of one of the most popular media among schoolchildren: the mobile phone camera. In Kolkata and Hamburg, the pupils went on a journey of discovery in their neighbourhoods to shoot microfilms on environmental topics from two different cultural backgrounds.

The project aimed to encourage children from both countries to take a closer look at their immediate environment and draw their attention to aspects they had not noticed before. It sought to build a cultural bridge between India and Germany and give young people in both countries a sense of global responsibility for sustainable development. What makes this project unique is the use of modern digital media, which enables an interactive exchange of experiences.

The following schools took part in the project in Hamburg:

Gymnasium Allermöhe
Rudolf-Roß-Gesamtschule Hamburg
Gesamtschule Hamburg-Harburg
Albert-Schweizer-Schule (Klein Borstel)
