KLIMA°Trax

Making climate protection tangible on the spot with mobile learning

KLIMA°Trax is a project that uses games to teach people about climate protection in a fun way. Between 2014 and 2016, a game app was developed that lets people follow climate protection routes (KLIMA°Trax) in different cities. Important facts and connections relating to climate protection were brought to life in a mobile game – and in the places where they are visible. This makes climate protection a living, motivating part of the local context.

Background to the project

KLIMA°Trax implemented location-based ‘climate education routes’ in six cities/municipalities, which can be followed on site using a mobile game on a smartphone or tablet. The KLIMA°Trax routes are accessible to anyone interested. The project sought to motivate school classes in particular to take part in the routes. Special group tasks were developed for school classes and educational materials were made available for teachers. The results of the school classes were entered into a local and national competition, which ended in October 2016. Prizes were awarded to the best group results. The KLIMA°Trax tours were developed in collaboration with local partners (city administration, environmental associations, etc.).

The KLIMA°Trax developed in the six cities are individually tailored to the respective locations and designed as a multiplayer game for the iPad. In addition, there is a smartphone version of KLIMA°Trax: This is a less location-based single-player version that can be played on any smartphone. The smartphone KLIMA°Trax was developed for around 50 cities in Germany.
